Embracing Natural Hair: A Journey to Self-Love

Embracing Natural Hair: A Journey to Self-Love

Natural hair holds deep cultural significance, especially for many Black women, as it is closely tied to heritage and identity. Choosing to embrace natural hair is a powerful statement of self-acceptance, one that rejects societal pressures to conform to Western beauty ideals. It’s not just about style; it's a celebration of individuality and history, allowing people to reconnect with their roots while proudly showcasing their natural beauty.

The journey to return to natural hair often leads to increased confidence and self-love. By learning to care for their curls, coils, and kinks, many women discover a deeper connection to themselves. This process can be transformative, leading to greater self-worth and a stronger sense of authenticity that extends far beyond hair.

In today’s world, social media has become an essential tool in normalizing natural hair and fostering a supportive community. Influencers and everyday individuals alike share their experiences, advice, and encouragement, creating an empowering space for those transitioning to natural hair. This online movement has made it easier for women to navigate their natural hair journey and feel inspired to fully embrace their look.

Following are a handful of personal stories of Black women in the BuzzFeed community who have made the choice to go natural.

“Grandma taught that your hair was your crown and glory... Growing up, I admired my grandmother…She and I had a common bond, but one thing I always admired the most about her was the family photo that sat above the fireplace. In that photo she had the biggest afro and huge glasses, just like a disco queen. I never got to meet that version of her, but I'm sure she was cool. In reflecting on my own hair journey, I realized I had never seen my natural hair until I was 23...perms and relaxers had become the simple solution to "managing" my nappy hair. It was a "rite of passage" to get your first perm when you came of age. .. it was an answered prayer to the countless broken tooth combs…the tear-stained cheeks on my tender head. It was a long-lasting solution to the temporary fix of the hot comb that left your hair straight long enough for you to go outside and have the heat and humid air puff it back up...” - Deja L. Jones, HuffPost Contributor, Dev 6, 2017

"I went natural because I permed my hair, and it began to fall out. That had never happened before, and I had to make a decision for the health of my crown! It also caused me to reflect on why I was doing it in the first place. Who said there was anything wrong with my hair? That question has caused me to do self-reflection, appreciate my natural state, and dig deep into who I am. I am excited to loc my hair when it grows out. Another journey of 'self love'." — be.that_kdan, Instagram

"I was given perms when I was younger, and when I was older, I continued to get them. Then, I had a child. And for all the effort, my hair always looked the same — there was nothing distinctive about it. I let my hair grow out and chopped it off after a few months. My kid saw me and said, 'Mommy…you have new hair!' I’ve gotten more compliments with my curly, frizzy fro than I ever got with perms. I’m effortlessly me, and my character shines through." — 5under

"Six years ago, I looked in the mirror, and my hair was two very different lengths. After chemically straightening it since I was in elementary school, dye jobs of every color, and all the heating tools, my hair was finally at its breaking point. That night, I shaved my head, vowing to never let heat or chemicals touch my hair ever again. It took a while for it to grow back, but corkscrew curls eventually sprang up. My hair hadn't done that since I was a child. So, I let it grow. I feel proud whenever I look in the mirror at my healthy head of curls. I wasted so many years trying to live up to some standard that was impossible for my hair — all because I didn't know that my hair was special or that there were hair products just for me. I will not make that mistake again." — j9er

"It started out by choosing my hair's health over other people's opinions and being tired of spending money on straightening my hair. Now, I feel much more comfortable wearing my natural." — hadasshshalom, Instagram
